Line Officially Launches in India With New TV Ads (VIDEO)

Line Officially Launches in India With New TV Ads
Japan-made Line app is weighing in to the social messaging app battle in India by officially launching in the country with the aid of two new TV adverts. Line has over 160 million worldwide users – about 70 percent of whom are outside Japan – but it has previously been focusing on Southeast Asia and China, not the South Asia area. That all changes now with Line’s two TV ads (embedded below), made especially for Indian youngsters, that emphasize the walkie-talkie-esque voice messaging and the massive, cutesy emoticons. Kudos to WatBlog for finding the ads. Line’s official launch and marketing push comes pretty late in the heated messaging app battle in Asia. China-made WeChat has been targeting India for a few months now with help from celebrities Parineeti Chopra and Varun Dhawan. Most of WeChat’s users are in China, but about 50 million of them are in other nations. Line is not only up against WeChat and established competition from Whatsapp, but there’s also homegrown app Hike, which features a clever switcheroo feature to let it be used via SMS when your data coverage gets patchy – especially useful in India. Here are the two ads: (Source: WatBlog)

Line app is still growing, brings in $194 million in revenue in Q3

Line reaches 10 million users in India, Katrina Kaif advertises Line appMessaging app Line, which now has 280 million registered users around the world, brought in JPY 19.1 billion in revenue – which is $194 million – in July to September (Q3). The newest figures from Line Corp – which is a recent spin-off from Korean web giant Naver (035420.KS) – show that Line’s revenue is up 48 percent from the previous quarter. Line Corp also revealed today that Line app is growing in Turkey, Italy, and across Latin America, in addition to the rapid growth it’s seeing in India thanks to spending a lot on TV commercials. Line aims to have 20 million users in India by the end of the year. Parent company Naver also revealed its Q3 earnings this afternoon. Naver’s revenues hit $551 million (up 42 percent year-on-year), but net profit dipped to $71.9 million. After spinning off Line into its own business in February this year, Naver also spun off its online gaming business – NHN Entertainment – in August, so that hurt Naver’s Q3 figures. Line looks set to reach 300 million users by the end of the year.
